In honor of Black History Month, we want to celebrate Garret Augustus Morgan. 🚦

Born in 1877, Morgan became a prolific inventor. While working to repair sewing machines for a clothing manufacturer in Cleveland, he became fascinated with how things work. In 1912 he got his first patent and a year later he opened his own hair care company. The idea for one of his most influential inventions came to him after he witnessed a terrible crash at an intersection. In 1923 he designed a traffic signal that had manually operated arms to signal go and stop. He eventually sold the rights to General Electric for $40,000.
